Finally, as an author, I have written the book which I personally wish I had had much earlier in my own life. As a road map, this book reveals how to discover your true calling, expand your capacity to dream, and maximize your acquirement of human hope. In plain language, it explains how to begin and continue to sustain a life of gratifying contentment. Unlike most self-help books, it contains none of the usual long list of dos and don’ts. Instead, it recommends very precise exercises and practical daily routines that are easy to follow and remember–including self-administered metrics for monitoring your own progress. If you are, or you know someone who might be in need of a practical manual to help him or her transition into successful adulthood; or a college student searching for relevant criteria for choosing the right major or a fulfilling career; a newlywed couple or a young professional who needs a guiding philosophy for achieving personal goals and aspirations; anyone actively searching for a more meaningful life; a parent, a teacher, or a counselor who needs a blueprint for mentoring and inspiring others–this book was written with you and them in mind. This is a book that is also full of practical tips for neutralizing the usual annoyances of everyday life as well as what to do exactly in the event of a personal misfortune or tragedy.
About the Author
Dr. Alphonsus Obayuwana has been involved in the study of Hope and Happiness since 1979, when as a medical student he first came in contact with psychiatric patients who had just attempted suicide. Forever transformed by these encounters, Dr. Obayuwana relentlessly continued his research on Human Hope for over 30 years in spite of a very demanding Ob/Gyn practice. His publications on the subject of Hope and Happiness can be found in local, national, and international (scientific and lay) journals including his 1984 national award-winning paper on “Stress, Human Hope, and Pregnancy Outcome”. His first book, The Five Sources of Human Hope: Mirror of our Humanity was published in 2012. In it, the rather elusive concept of “Human Hope” was extensively examined, analyzed, deconstructed, explained, and very successfully seperated from mythology. He demystified Hope and effectively removed it forever from abstraction by making it more tangible, real, and accessible. “How to live a life of hope” is the second book in his envisioned trilogy on the subject of Hope and Happiness. In this book, he has masterfully weaponized human hope into a practical tool for everyday optimal living. Currently, Dr. Obayuwana is the Lead Coach and CEO of the Triple-H Project, LLC — an entity solely dedicated to the promotion of hopeful and happier human communities He is a retired Major in US Air Force Reserve, who has also previously held faculty positions at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, the University of Maryland College of Medicine, Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, and the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio. He is also a former Associate Chair in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Vincent Medical Center, in Toledo, Ohio.

Review – HOW TO LIVE A LIFE OF HOPE
Author: Alphonsus Obayuwana, M.D.
This book encompasses most aspects of human ingenuity – psychological, philosophical, sociological, biological, and of course, theological. I think it is worth mentioning that the author is a Physician, and it is fascinating therefore that he is able to incorporate all these potentials in the writing of this book. It is undeniably, a Best Seller.
For all intents and purposes, the commonality among all the components is unique, and deserves to be discussed. Psychologically, the author opined that Hope breeds self-esteem and optimism; whereas pessimism often leads to despair. There is no question about the negativity of people who are observed to be gloomy and fault-finding. Expatiating on the Theological characteristic, the author informs us that Spirituality and strong faith in God would translate to Courage and Hope, and he advises us to be helpful to others in need. “When you are helpful to others in need, it gives you the moral justification and courage to expect that others will help you, and that gives you hope”. As I concentrated more into the author’s analysis, his philosophical message is understood to mean that we are asked to cherish what we have in order for its value to appreciate. I was able to deduce a very valuable and captivating sociological lesson from reading this book when the author explained, “No matter how poor you are, you are privileged with some amount of basic resources at all times”. This is true but only a handful of people are aware of this circumstance. It is consequential for our Sociologists and Social Workers to introduce this fact to their clients; assure them that it is a privilege to have what they presently possess. I will introduce this book to offices and schools of Social Services, and will in fact, purchase some copies for Social Workers.
By living a life of Hope, we are encouraged to recognize that “Ignorance is the true original sin, while knowledge remains humankind’s greatest power”. The author further asks us to celebrate our achievements, enjoy the journey every day, while deemphasizing the destination. That is living a life of HOPE.
On a personal note, this book is so interesting, informative and intoxicating that I was unable to put it down once I started reading it. “How to live a life of Hope” became an addiction I could not put it down, especially as it reminded me of my days as a Mental Health Evaluator at the MacLaren Children Center in California some years past. From this book, I found joy in what I did to assist those young man and women who needed to be thought how to live a life of hope. If this book had been printed at that time, my job would have been made easier. In conclusion, I am suggesting that every household should have a copy of this book for the inviolability of the mind and soul. I advise parents and their children to read and understand the content of this book. On the scale of 1 to 10, I give it a 10.

Dr. Alphonsus Obayuwana Hits a Home Run with “How to Live a Life of Hope.”

(Review By Ben I. Omorogbe, Esq.)
Not only does Dr. Obayuwana hit a “homerun” with the content of this book, but also for the timing of its release (2021) as the world continues to grapple with the uncertainty brought about by the global pandemic of the Coronavirus. Research has shown that hope helps humans in managing stress and anxiety and contributes to our well-being, happiness and positive action.
In this easy-to-read book, Dr. Obayuwana meticulously lays out steps that are necessary to find one’s calling and achieve self-actualization. He flawlessly explains how hope increases the sense of meaning in life and the realization of goals and dreams even in the midst of adversity. Not only am I recommending the book for every person capable of reading, but I have committed to using the book as the “wining prize” for my colleagues who volunteer to mentor new lawyers or law students.
Kudos to Dr. Obayuwana for once again hitting a home run with this book. I can’t wait for his next book.

A quick and impactful read that everyone can find meaning in
Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2021
A quick and impactful read, How to Live a Life of Hope reaches a topic that as humans we often take for granted when it comes to the impact it has on nearly everything we experience; the topic of hope, what it means for us and what to do with that information. Dr. Obayuwana grounds his findings in the equation of Hope over Hunger and takes you on a journey of self-discovery and understanding the many layers of hope that you may not have known existed. He helps readers self-evaluate their own status of hope with tools like the Personal Instant Self-Assessment (PISA) and Hope Scale and Hunger Scale, providing insight into how to act on those evaluations and how to proliferate living a life of hope. His book combines self-discovery with self re-discovery whether you are a college student navigating an uncharted life path or an established career-professional that would benefit from re-inventing yourself through the passions you may already have. I highly recommend you take the time to read this book, it is unlikely you will finish it without having uncovered something significant about how you can better sustain hope in your own life.

Life Preparations or Lessons for your Life

Unlike many self-help books out there, the Author of “How to Live a Life of Hope”, Dr. Obayuwana takes the Reader through a step-by-step process of not only finding your Calling in life, but achieving self-actualization through HOPE.
I liked PISA Hope Scale because it helps you establish your current well-being status, and then shows you, step-by-step, how to increase your Hope, reduce your hunger, and increase your Happiness.
I very much enjoyed the discussion on “how to sustain a life of hope”, in which the Author described the “five essential human assets”, as opposed to the phrase, “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” that you need to sustain a life of Hope.
The Book, “How To Live a Life of Hope”, is easy to read and understand, and has step-by-step applications to your life.
